  2. These are incredible, mary! I love how diverse they are some, but they still really look like your work..

I also love how you had a few action shots. I'm also so scared to do that with film.

I especially love the legs kicking the water and the double exposure of your sister in the mirror with the picture.

  15. Unbelievably gorgeous. I love the order the photos are in - it starts of so twee, innocent and idyllic and very slowly creeps into eerie, unsettling, gloomy goodness!

  19. (1/2)hi mary. i've been following your blog for a little while now and for the most part i really like your work. you come up with interesting concepts and capture moods and emotions relatively well. but i'd like to see you start to think about composition a little bit more, mostly in terms of where you place your colors, lights, and darks. the 9th photo in this post of the water stands out to me as better than the rest because of the intensity of the light in the center and the way it cuts through the two darker areas and also because of the sharpness of focus on the surface of the water, revealing its texture. its a more nuanced image than the others, which frankly fall a little flat sometimes.

  20. (2/2) the flatness, when it occurs, is likely largely due to your lack of control over printing and developing. since you just have them processed at a lab and prints made there (correct?) you don't have the opportunity to edit the way traditional printers do in a darkroom where you can change the contrast and exposure and burn and dodge. and of course i support the purity of film and understand any hesitation to bring your images into a digital editing program, i think your work could benefit from testing it out.

oh, and this is meant to be constructive criticism. as encouraging as "this is amazing!" a hundred times may be, it isn't helpful, and as a fellow photographer and artist i'm always looking for someone to suggest how i could be better. so i try to do the same for others.
